We did a 9-day dive trip ke Palau selama libur Lebaran 2011, mulai tanggal 26 Agustus – 3 September.

Diving di house reef is free and unlimited.

Nitrox is also free, tapi the air in the tanks is always generous. Average dive time is 60-65mins, with my 2 longest dives being 70 and 73mins. Coming back up to the boat, I always have at least 60 bars on the gauge.

Kalau mau istirahat dari diving, bisa juga melakukan kayaking di dalam lagoons, land tours, cave trekking, or snorkel dan explore the rock islands.

Diving at this time of the year is the low season, jadi gak banyak divers. Musim hujan juga pas selesai. Everyday the weather was sunny and warm. Water temp was 29-30C. Just beautiful.

Beberapa highlights:

German Channel
Topographynya mirip The Channel di Maratua, tetapi dengan cleaning stations for the Mantas. Kalau pagi Mantanya di cleaning station, tapi kalau siang mereka feeding di deep blue, or in the mouth of the channel. Sebelum turun saja dari atas kapal sudah kelihatan banyak mantas, sharks, squids, bahkan black-tips swimming back and forth di sekitar kapal with their dorsal fins piercing the surface.

Tidak lama setelah turun di deep blue, we were greeted by mantas yang sedang feeding, gray reef sharks, black and white-tips, tunas, GTs, Napoleons. Mantas tidak segan-segan approach divers dan swim back and forth around divers. At the end kami ikuti arus masuk ke dalam channel, ketika sampai di atas satu cleaning station kami baru sadar akan satu grup besar divers dari Jepang watching us. Rupanya dari tadi mereka diam dibalik cleaning station menunggu manta datang.....but got our group instead.8)

Siaes Corner
Another famous site with its strong currents, disini banyak sharks (gray, white, black), groupers, big school of snappers, GTs, bumphead, batfish. Drift diving, the highlight was a pair of juvenile eagle rays yang tidak malu di foto, and kept following us throughout the dive.

Dalam perjalanan ke site berikutnya we met a pod of dolphins yang senang sekali bermain around our speedboat.

Shark City
Sambil finning sideways and up akhirnya berhasil keluar dari downcurrent, only to be swept up by upcurrent to 15m!

At this point we slowly did our ascent, deployed SMBs, safety stop, all the while while drift diving further out into the deep blue. Awesome boat captain, just kept following our bubbles and SMBs. We had drifted so far into the middle of the ocean. Nice dive tho! :D

Blue Corner (reef on left)
Arguably Palau’s most famous site. We dropped in front of the wall and were greeted by reef sharks. Drifted along the wall, together with the sharks patrolling back and forth. Swam towards the top of the wall, then hooked ourselves on dead rock to watch the sharks, baby and adult barracudas, Napoleons, bumphead, GTs, groupers.

After unhooking, we spent the rest of the dive on top of the reef near the corner, swimming amongst barracudas, bumpheads and trevallies, with the playful Napoleons always around.

Awesome.

Blue Corner (reef on right)
Descended on the opposite side of the reef. Fish everywhere – just sensory overload – but quickly headed out towards the deep blue. Langsung diikuti oleh beberapa huge Napoleons that want to play. When the photographers lifted their cameras, the Napoleons langsung berpose tanpa malu-malu. About 30-40 meters out, we stopped dan membalikkan badan. Abyss below us, facing the wall and drifting left, you just hover and watch the show in front and above the wall. Huge ball of jacks, snappers, groupers, tuna, GTs, barracudas, bumpheads, Napoleons, triggers and of course, sharks.

As we approached the corner, we headed back to the wall and hooked ourselves on dead rock in a single file along the top of the wall, about 12 meters deep. With currents blowing against us, now we’re in the middle of all the fish we were just watching beforehand. Sharks patrolling, often coming from behind you, all kinds of fish just swimming between your legs, around your body, and literally touching your mask. Meanwhile the Napoleons keep coming back and asking to play. After a good 15 mins we headed back towards the deep blue to swim with the barracudas, from babies to adult chevrons, tunas and trevallies.

Towards the end we headed back to the wall and turned the corner, drifting with the current. Continuing to move with the wall on the right, we ascended slowly, safety stop, all the while accompanied by the same Napoleons that just would not quit.

Whew! Best dive overall hands down.

Ulong Channel
Drift diving along the channel, dimana bawahnya pasir tapi di sepanjang kiri dan kanan terdapat very healthy hard corals in abundance, cascading upwards. Felt a bit like on a race circuit, zooming along the sand tapi looking left & right seperti looking at the grandstand. Gray reefs and white-tips, turtles, garden eels. Very fun.

Ulong Wall & Corner
Bait-ball of scads being picked out and eaten by GTs, Napoleons, groupers, which in turn brings out the gray reefs, black and white-tips. Hovered for nearly 20 mins just watching the endless show of bait ball breaking in all directions, frantically avoiding the predators coming in for a bite. Just awesome. 2nd best dive of trip.

Chandelier Cave
The interior of the cave is made up of stalactites (limestone pinnacle dari ceiling) dan stalagmites (limestone pinnacle dari seabed) yang sangat besar-besar hingga menyerupai chandeliers, hence the name.

Terus masuk ke dalam hingga sampai di chamber pertama, where we can surface for air. Ini dilanjutkan terus sampai ke chamber ke-2, 3 dan 4. Chamber terakhir is completely above water. To enter the last chamber you must take your gear off and squeeze thru some very small openings.

Selama di dalam cave sinar dari senter akan saling memantul dari stalactites & stalagmites, creating a very cool effect. Di dalam setiap chamber sinar senter juga akan bring out the really nice colors and shapes dari ceiling and walls.

Jellyfish Lake
Very similar to the one in Kakaban and Maratua. Tapi menurut the locals, disini cuma ada 2 species of the stingless jellyfish (vs. 4 species di Kakaban?). Tapi unlike Kakaban, jalan tapaknya belum dibuatkan dari kayu, jadi accessing the lake thru the forest masih harus mendaki bebatuan, where some parts can be steep, yang biasanya memakan waktu 30 menit.

Diving di Palau bisa either liveaboard or land based.

Then Continental serves the MNL-Guam-MNL route, via Palau. Gak perlu visa, not even visa on arrival. Just airport tax USD35 waktu cabut.

Official currency is USD, and everybody speaks English. Palau sangat mengacu pada US, life there is very laid back dan casual. Everyday you'll meet a mixture of people from the US, Europe, the locals, dan pekerja-pekerja dari Philippines. Penghasilan terbesar negara ini dari diving tourism, so they really welcome divers and treat you well.

Untuk photo, nanti kalo para photographernya udah upload photos I'll post a link here. Sorry I'm not a photographer....don't like it, never cared for it. hehe :D

Well you can visit each dive op's website utk packaged pricenya, lengkap dengan pilihan hotel. Tapi sebagai gambaran, package dengan hotel yang tengah2, per orang kira2 USD1,000. Ini utk 5-dive days, 2 dives per day plus unlimited house reef, hotel pickup, airport transfers, lunch on dive days, hotel breakfasts. Kalau utk Sam's, Chandelier Cave is already included karena dekat. Additional 3rd dive $35-$45. Belum termasuk dinner every night dan conservation fees/permits, starting from $35.
